Monday, June 15, 2009 Hi Wonderful People! I am finally here to revive my dead blog. No more Pokka coffee staring at you. Yay! I have finally cleared all the necessary work (not all the work though =p) and it's time for me to take a break. My June holidays is only starting now after all the madness and the mad rush. Going to Taipei for a long-awaited break with Angela, Candice and Susan for 6 days of shopping and eating. Taipei, Here we come!! Will update when I'm back. To all the wonderful people who are reading this, please take a good rest during the holidays. Take care. 0 Comments:Monday, February 09, 2009 A quick update before the turtle grumbles again. Tell you more later about what she did last night. *Faint* Anyway, I went to NIE with Angela to do our work. In the midst of marking, I went to get two cans of Pokka Milk coffee from the vending machine, one for Angela and one for me, to keep us awake. When the cans dropped from the vending machine, guess what, the cans were not cold, it was hot, extremely hot. For a while, stupid me was thinking it's probably the heat from the sun shining on the vending machine, just like how water from the tap would be warm in the hot afternoon. When I went back to our tables, Angela told me that Pokka's vending machine is more high-tech now. There's an option for cold or hot coffee, and I happened to press the hot option. When I pulled the tag and drank from the can, the coffee inside was piping hot! Amazing right? Haha. Maybe it's only amazing to mountain turtles like me. Haha. Anyway, I was so fascinated with that hot can of coffee. Haha. ************************ Back to that turtle. Yesterday at 12 plus in the wee morning, she smsed me and asked me to tune in to 93.3. I was like 'DUH! What's wrong with that turtle? Doesn't turtle sleep at night?' Anyway, she managed to call through the hotline and she spoke on the national radio. It's not her first time calling through. I wonder how lucky she can get, or maybe it's too late so no one bothered to call in. Then back to the song dedication. Yes she dedicated a song to me and Rabbit and not forgetting her favourite idol JJ. And you know what, I was expecting her to say things like 'I wish to dedicate the next song to my favourite teacher, Miss Ang' and maybe say mushy things like 'She misses me' or 'I'm the most wonderful teacher in her heart.' haha. Nah, she never mentioned any of that. Nothing close to that. Instead she said, 'I would like to dedicate this song to my Ah-ma who is 28 going to 29 years old.' The DJ was so confused and asked her how come her 'Ah-ma' is so young. Then she explained that 'Ah-ma' is actually her teacher, and she called her teacher 'Ah-ma' because she is very naggy! *Eye-balls rolling Sickening turtle. Thanks ar for that dedication!! Now then miss my nagging when I don't teach you. When I nagged at you last year, still said that I was very naggy. And what's new. The message for me was to update my blog!! Super DUH lor. Does she need to announce it on 93.3? Na, here's an entry specially for you at your request!! And guess what, our dear Rabbit managed to call in too. *Faint* second time. She dedicated the song to her mother who is 28 going to 29 years old. Gosh, little animals, I know I'm getting old, going to hit the big 3 soon, but sigh, who wants to grow old? This is something that is definitely not within our control. Hmm, my next question is: Is it so easy to call in to 93.3? Isn't it supposed to be a HOTLINE? Then how come they can call in so easily? Maybe animals have a special line to call in that will never be engaged! Haha. Anyway, wonderful people, not that I don't want to update. I have plenty of things to post, knowing my naggy nature. However, I really can't find the time to blog. There's a thousand and one things to do, and my to-do list never gets shorter. I was half-way through my OSL Batam post and it was only half-completed since December 2008. Yes, I will definitely find time to update my 'dying' blog. ************************ Just a thought before I end this post. No one can please everyone. I can't too. I was sharing with wonderful student about something that I have come to know about. Like what he said, I shouldn't be too bothered about it because there isn't a need to do that. I should have used the time on other more meaningful tasks. Yes, how true is that. On another note, it's really disappointing to know that people can change so fast. That a simple matter can show the undesirable side of them, uttering those hurtful remarks and walking past me as though I'm invisible. Then again, I was thinking, why should I be so affected when he doesn't seem the least bit affected or remorseful at all. Is it so hard for him to apologise when he is the one at fault? Sigh, let's not dwell too much on disappointing matters. Let's end this post with something meaningful that I found on 123Greetings.com, a prayer for all of you, especially teachers. May we have the strength and peace to continue the tough but fulfilling and fruitful journey. 0 Comments:Friday, December 05, 2008 Time to upload the Graduation Night pictures. Graduation Night was held at Hilton Hotel. The teachers were commenting that the food this year at Hilton was not as good as the food last year at Meritus Mandarin even though the students had to pay $5 more compared to last year. Nevertheless, I guess food wasn't so much on the students' agenda. What matter most is the presence of their friends and the never-ending phototaking and flashlight to retain the memory. Took quite a lot of pictures but a pity that some of the pictures did not turn out as good so they were not uploaded yet. Of course the teachers took the opportunity to take pictures too, not that it's our last year in school. My best friends at work. These are pictures taken with my wonderful students from 4T1. That's Wei An, our 'black horse' for the top student candidate for the GCE N Level results which will be released in mid December. Or maybe golden horse based on his hair colour. Haha, this picture did not come easy k. We took a few pictures before the fussy teacher was satisfied with the pictures. Either the fussy teacher's eyes blinked as usual or she looked ugly, not that she has ever looked pretty in real life. Haiz, if only Rabbani was in the picture. Picture taken with Sheeraz before he was crowned the "Prom King'. He still scolded me for sabotaging him when we nominated him for the award since he looked quite dashing on that day. So far for all the pictures, Vickson is the only one who is taller than me on that day. Haha. Photo taken with my monster Jummie. The next few pictures were taken with my wonderful students whom I taught when they were in lower secondary. That's my darling Evelyn. My dear nu-er, Hui Min. I took a picture with my nu-er and my 'son-in-law' too but that picture was too blur, so I did not upload it. Bryan must be heaving a sigh of relief. Haha. His hair was gelled up nicely with gel and shiny glitters k. That's sweet sweet Silvia with the sweet sweet dress. That's Haojie and Zhong Yan. My two sons back then in 2006 when we went for OSL Yunnan. This Zhong Yan ar, tried so hard to be the same height as me so he tiptoed until other pictures appeared blur. This is the best picture even though it's quite blur. That's Yu Xiang, my second favourite EL Rep back then. The first was Wei Lun. =) That picture was taken at the end of the Grad Night, outside the entrance of Hilton. That's why my eyes were so small. Or rather I'm just finding some silly excuses for my stupid eyes which will blink when there's flashlight. Cannot make it sia. Haha That's ABL with ABL, Haha. Aw Beng Loon and Ang Bee Lee. Beng Loon and I have the same initials. Beng Loon has really grown so much taller over the years. Now he's taller than me even though I'm wearing heels on that day. That's Youzhi, our Student Councillor President. That's Hazel, our Vice-President. Where's Cindy? Didn't get to take picture with her on that day. Esther looked so different on that day, was it the hair? or a slimmer Esther? That's cute cute Wilson. He will 'Ewww' when he read that. Haha. and charming Andre and Doreen and Jagan, our Speech Day MC for 2 years. That reminds me, I didn't see Rachelle on that day. The picture is quite blur ya. That's my responsible and dutiful facilitators for the OSL Batam trip, Mansur and Vengadaz.
Going to miss all these wonderful students badly when they are not around in school next year. Oh man, time really flies so fast. Four years have gone by so fast. I guess the next time when I saw all of them again will be during the release of the N levels or O levels results. Let's hope they will all do well in their future endeavours. Thanks for all the fond memories for these four years. 0 Comments:Thursday, December 04, 2008 Here's the long overdue update about the W4 ASCENT @ Yunnan trip. It was indeed an enriching and educational trip for the NT students from 5 secondary schools in the cluster, namely Bukit View Secondary School, Hong Kah Secondary School, Hua Yi Secondary, Jurongville Secondary School and Yuan Ching Secondary School. The educational aspect was mainly conducted in Yunnan Provincial Tourism School. The first activity was a introduction presented by the lecturer, Miss An, introducing Yunnan and its tourist attractions. After the introduction, it was the Sports Service component. Our students were introduced to Golf, from the techniques and postures of holding a golf club and the correct way to swing the club. After the session, our school students posed for a picture. Then we went for a tour at the Dinosaur Museum. The dinosaur fossil that was behind us were made up of the real dinosaur bones that were dug by a group of students from Yunnan Provincial Tourism School in 1958. Unbelievable right! Does it remind you of the movie 'Jurassic Park'? On the third day, we were introduced to the Food and Beverages aspect. We learnt how to set the dining table for both Chinese style and Western style. It's not as simple as just placing the cutlery properly. There are reasons for placing a particular cutlery at that position and even the seating arrangement, who should sit where and why. Gosh, to think that we didn't think much about the setting at first. As for the western style of setting the table, it was even more detailed, 2 cm from the side of the table or 5 cm from the side of the table for specific cutlery. Shuqri even brought along a long ruler for the trip to measure for our group! We also learnt to prepare a mocktail. That picture was taken before we tried our mocktail. Ours was too sweet as we added too much honey. Following the mocktail, we learnt the art of Chinese Tea ceremony. On Day Five, the students were introduced to Chinese painting. That's a picture of the master who is well-known for his peony painting. That was his masterpiece which was completed effortlessly within ten minutes. That's a picture of our students who were trying their best to draw the peony. Some of them have not even seen a real peony at all. In the end, some of the paintings looked like orchids or pink chrysanthemum instead! Well, they do deserve credits for the effort that they have put in. These students posing in the picture with their completed paintings were the better and more talented students identified by the master. Following the Chinese Painting workshop, it was time to learn more about Traditional Chinese Medicine. We learnt more about acunpuncture, traditional massage therapy and chinese medicinal products and herbs. At the end of the five days of educational experience, there was a graduation ceremony for the students. Every student received two certificates from Yunnan Provincial Tourism School for the completion of the Tourism and cultural immersion programme. Here's a picture of the students posing with their certificates. Our school students with their certificates. A group picture taken for the memories at Yunnan University. A picture of the teachers accompanying the students for this trip. For one of the Tourism components, we went to Stone Forest on Day Four of our trip. Stone Forest is a must-see tourist attaction when tourists visit Kunming. There is an old local saying, "If you have visited Kunming without seeing the Stone Forest, you have wasted your time." The background of the picture is the natural stone masterpieces formed by a retreat of the waters and the rise of the limestone landscape. That's a picture taken with Huijun, a teacher from Jurongville and the tour guide Judy. Somehow, Huijun reminds me of Venus. Just feel that both of them do share some resemblance in terms of appearance, not the way they laugh. Haha. Another group picture taken at Stone Forest. The Chinese characters 'Shi Lin' is the Chinese name for Stone Forest. The teachers' turn to hold the banner and pose for the camera. On Day Six, we visited the Dianchi Lake. This is no ordinary lake. The size of this lake is bigger than the size of Singapore. Can you imagine that? Incredulous! This picture was taken during our climb up the Western Hills Scenic Area. It was really tiring climbing many flights of steps that were so steep. Time for the teachers to pose for the camera. That's Huijun and Han Hwa. Another picture taken with Huijun with the Dianchi Lake as the background. Look at all our exhausted faces after we had completed the tedious climb. On Day Seven, we visited an olive farm, Olive Connexions. As quoted on their website, the company was founded in 2004 by a small group of Singaporeans with a vision to establish a successful and profitable international business enterprise by bringing together the best and most efficient in agriculture and technology while acting as a positive interactive and transforming agent to local communities. The man in the picture below is Steve, someone whom I'm very impressed with. Like what I was sharing with Han Hwa, this man is marvellous! He has done so much for his employees in Olive Connexions, equipping the locals with the skills and empower the poorer communities with the means to earn a living. He has also improved the hygiene and sanitary conditions in the outskirts of Kunming. He could enjoy his life comfortably in Singapore with the pension that he received from the Navy after his retirement. Yet, he chose to sacrifice his comfortable life and go to a new country armed with a noble aim and a big dream. There is just so much to share about this wonderful man. If you were there, you will really marvel at the achievements that Steve has achieved and admire him for the courage to take such a bold step. What really touched my heart was the answer that he gave to Javihn, our tour guide. When Javihn asked him how he was able to give up everything in Singapore and go to a foreign land and start everything afresh the tough way, his answer was "It was a calling from God to help the poorer communities". Gosh, with that sentence, I marvel at the power of God and truly, Steve has really earned my respect, and that of many of us who were there to experience his benevolence. That really set me thinking, With the calling from God, Steve could do so much for God and many other people. That made me so guilty k. Even though God has done so much for me, I am not even ready to take a bold step of committing myself to know more about HIM and accepting HIM.
We were really treated with great hospitality by Steve and his family and his workers. They prepared lunch for us, authentic Singaporean Nasi Lemak and many other dishes. It was really a pleasant treat for us as many of us really missed the food back in Singapore after being away from home for seven days. We know we should be appreciative of the food that we ate in Yunnan and not complained so much. Every meal that we had in Yunnan, there were definitely ten dishes on our table, a feast as perceived by the locals as the poorer people don't get to feast on such luxury every day, maybe only during festivals. However, the food in Yunnan isn't really suitable for our tastebuds. It's really oily and salty and spicy in a weird way as the spices that they use for their cooking is really different from what we use. So what's the purpose of commenting so much about food? It's not only to praise Steve and family for the delicious food, but also for us to learn to be more appreciative of our mothers' cooking and not to pick on our food and waste the food. One of the planned activities that we were supposed to do is to plant a fig tree. That picture was taken after we have planted the tree. Another picture with the teachers for the memories. After the tree-planting, the students and teachers played basketball and soccer at the farm. Yes, there's a proper basketball court at the farm. Surprised ya? It was really a different experience playing basketball in the farm. It was about 13 degrees celsius and it's really cooling and chilly playing basketball in the open. This is the first time in my entire life that I did not perspire when I played basketball. I'm not a freak please, the rest of them did not perspire too. Even though we did get breathless easily while playing because the air up the mountains is thinner, it was really a good workout for me for an hour the 'no-perspiration' way. Haha. A picture with Steve and the teachers The last group picture for the trip. It was really a pleasant and enjoyable eight-day trip summarised in two thousand words or more maybe. From the beginning when I wasn't so looking forward to this trip to one that I truly enjoy and had the opportunity to see things from a different perspective and be more appreciative of the things around me, it was really a fantastic learning experience. Special thanks to Javihn, Edwin and Mr Ong from Factor Learning who had coordinated the trip and gone beyond their duty to ensure that the trip went smoothly and our needs were met without compromising on the quality of the trip. Thanks to Taffy for coordinating all the planning and admin matters of the trip, and not forgetting Han Hwa, Huijun and Hon for being such caring and thoughtful companions for the trip. |
