Doesn't this place look really scenic? But we were not there for any sight-seeing, we were there to do our Staff Community Involvement Programme (CIP). Haha, you did not read wrongly. I was equally surprised when I learnt that teachers were required to do CIP. Many teachers were surprised when it was announced during Contact Time. When we led students to do their CIP activities, weren't teachers already involved in CIP in one way or another? Hence, why the need for a Staff CIP? And it's all the way to Pulau Ubin for CIP and we went there for beach cleaning and tree planting! So the picture that u have seen above was taken at Pulau Ubin during the CIP on a Saturday morning.

We took this picture while waiting for the ferry at Changi Jetty. A 'royal family' reunion with our new member, Marhaini. Haha.

When we arrived at Pulau Ubin, we spent the time taking pictures while waiting for the rest of the teachers to arrive. Each ferry can only take 12 passengers and they charged us $2 for the 5-min ride.

Jiamin was so happy that she can finally be taller than Siraj and Marhaini. haha, even though it was only for a few seconds.

Enough of the pictures for the time being. haha. Time for some educational talk to save the environment. That is the main purpose of the CIP instead of a photo-taking session.

For the first part of the programme, we spent the time clearing the beach. We cleared quite a substantial amount of rubbish and we probably filled up more than 50 trash bags and the guide estimated that to be 100 tonnes of rubbish. Wow!

According to the guide, the most harmful rubbish is styrofoam and plastic containers. It will take the longest time to decompose and they will need a million years to decompose. By the time we disappear from the Earth, all these rubbish will still be around.

Gosh, if it wasn't for this CIP programme, I wouldn't know about this fact and I would still be happily using, wasting and throwing away all those plastic containers and styrofoam boxes. Hence, we should really try to reduce the usage of styrofoam boxes and plastic containers to save the poor Earth that we are living on.

After a tiring beach cleaning, we went on a guided nature trail led by the trainer. Along the way, the guide shared with us many valuable information how the various plant, insects and animal co-exist in that natural habitat.

During the nature walk, we saw a 'cave'. We were so amazed by it and our dear Subair decided to re-enact a 'perspective shot' that we have taken in Yunnan.

The picture above was taken in Pulau Ubin and the picture below was taken in Yunnan. See the difference. The cave in Yunnan is more impressive ya? Haha. Anyway, according to Subair, the person in a perspective shot mustn't look at the camera when the picture is taken, he should look away from a camera.

No more perspective shot, and another royal family photo to add to the album.

We saw this "Secret Garden" during the nature trail. Look at how Esther and Marhaini have aptly demonstrated the 'mystery' of the Secret Garden and that left Siraj, Maziyan and Subair in bewilderment. Haha.

Back to some serious stuff again. haha. The second part of the CIP programme was supposed to be a tree-planting segment. But due to some 'unforeseen circumstances', we planted cucumber seeds instead. It's not really unforeseen circumstances, the guide did explain to us why the tree-planting session was forsaken. It's for the benefit of the trees actually, but to cut a story short, 'unforeseen circumstances' was conveniently used. Haha.

Back to the planting of the cucumber seeds. We needed to loosen the soil, level the ground, dig out holes to grow the seeds, cover the holes when the seeds were placed in the holes and finally, water the seeds with a large amount of water, to such an extent where the seeds were drowned in the soil.

There was a well where we could get the water to water the plants. Amazing right? How often do we get to see a well that still has water in it? Being ELDDs teachers-in-charge, their acting talent and the urge to act were activated when they saw the well. According to the impromptu story plot that they had come up with, Subair was supposed to kill himself by jumping into the well. Maziyan, being the kind Grandmama, had to stop his dear grandson from committing suicide by pulling his legs. I doubt the pulling act would be useful. Haha. But it did look convincing right? At least, you would bother to take a second look at what they were doing.

After the cucumber-seed-planting task was completed, the guys posed with their tools for the camera as proof that they had really sweated it out at Pulau Ubin.

After the CIP, we went to Secret Recipe for lunch. We met up with Charmane and Jiabao. She brought her cute baby with her and everyone of us was fussing over her baby.

While ordering the food and drinks, we ordered some green apple drink. We were quite surprised when the waiter told us that they had run out of green apples. Our dear Jiabao commented, "Giant is just nearby, you can buy the green apples from there." The waiter was dumbfounded by such a comment and the rest of us burst out laughing.

While waiting for the food, I was talking to Siraj about the Japan trip. Somehow, I wasn't really that keen and enthusiastic about this trip compared to the OSL Yunnan trip.

I guess the nature of both trips is very different. The Japan trip is a humanities field trip whereas the Yunnan trip was an overseas service-learning trip. For the previous trip, there were a lot of interaction, preparation and fund-raising involved prior to the trip. Moreover, we had greater ownership and involvement in the programme. We also had a say in the choice of the students we selected for the trip, compared to the Japan trip where I probably only know a quarter of the students who are going for the trip.

Sigh, perhaps the previous trip brought back too much fond memories. Even up till now, when our royal family talks about the trip, we will still laugh about those funny incidents and reminisce about those good old times.

Come to think of it, I was a bit apprehensive when I was approached a second time to go for this trip. Initially, when Tan Huong and Jiamin approached Subair and I to follow them for the trip, we were still quite excited about it. Everything was more or less confirmed after Tan Huong has seeked Mrs Tan's approval for us to go for the trip. Then, all of a sudden, Elizabeth told us that she disapproved of Subair and I to go for the trip, as there are three days of oral exams scheduled during the first week of the holidays. She can't afford to release three EL teachers to be exempted from the oral exams as she would be short of EL teachers to take the students for the oral exams. We were quite disappointed initially.

Then Tan Huong needed to approach Michael and Patsy for the trip. Everything was confirmed and then Patsy wasn't able to go for the trip due to family reason and work commitment. I was only informed of the trip barely a few days ago. Up to now, I haven't really packed my luggage yet.

One thing that was holding me back from going to the trip would be my brother. Initially, I thought I could spend more time with him during the holidays, while he is recuperating at home. Recently, I could sense the change in him. I wonder if it's due to the aftermath of the car accident. He has been very impatient and short-tempered. I wouldn't feel comfortable leaving him alone as my parents and siblings are working, and I feel that he needs family members to be around so that he would feel more at ease as we would be there to shower him with care and concern and to encourage him.

He still has not come to terms with the accident. Initially, I thought he would be okay with his friend, a friend who he has known for ten years and it's the same friend who has caused him to be in such a tragic state. Then, I realised that he actually hated the friend. We can't really blame the friend for that because no one has expected the accident to happen. But if only he did not drink and drive, perhaps this accident could be avoided.

That friend is actually serving his NS as a policeman. To be caught for drink-driving and causing grievous hurt to the passenger is a serious offence, what is worse is that he is a policeman who has not set a good example. He might be jailed or fined for that offence, hence his future will be affected and the friend's mum is blaming my brother for the accident, saying that if my brother has not gone drinking with his son, all these wouldn't have happened.

Excuse me auntie, it was your son who was moody and has asked my brother out for a drink, so don't say that my brother loves to drink so much and has caused trouble for your son. My brother has definitely gone through so much more than your son. He has a 40-cm operation scar from below the chest to the belly button. He has removed his spleen, a vital organ that prevents him from bacteria infection. He has gone through post-traumatic amnesia and the mental struggle that he has to cope with on top of the physical injuries. He still has to go for one more operation to remove the glass pieces from his eye lid. The crack in the hipbone will restrict my brother's movement in future. He will not be able to engage in any strenuous activities in future. What are all these compared to your son's future? He did not even sustain any injuries at all.

Damn it, the thought of it just makes my blood boils. Perhaps, this is what God has planned for my brother. All I pray for is for him to recover fully and he will be able to resolve any hatred in him. It's not easy. He needs time., but time wouldn't wait for him. Sigh...

Damn fed up with this particular student's mum. She's simply so unreasonable. I don't even know the student nor teach her, and I wasn't even present when the incident happened. I really had no idea how I got myself into such mess, but I reckon that's part and parcel of the 'package' that comes along with being a teacher in the discipline com.

It really made my blood boil at the mere mention of it. It's about the confiscation of a handphone. It has been conveyed to the students that SIM card will be confiscated too together with the handphone, and the holidays doesn't count in the confiscation period of ten weeks. Yet, just because it wasn't indicated in the student handbook, she can argue her way unreasonably.

This is a classic case of 'give the person an inch, she wants a yard'. She didn't even think her daughter was in the wrong, and just because she allowed her daughter to bring a handphone to school, she felt that the school had no right to confiscate her daughter's handphone.

In front of Mrs Tan, she can arrogantly demand that she wanted the handphone back. Hello Madam, you are talking to the Principal and you don't even know your manners or basic courtesy.

That irrational parent even wanted to fault me for not responding to her call fast. She claimed that she called on Monday and left a message with one of the teachers. By the time I saw the message, it was already late afternoon. I needed to check with Patsy first before I can handle her unreasonable demand. Besides, I was really busy with the councillors investiture, the reading enrichment programme and the results slips for the past few days. Those were matters that were of higher priorities that required my immediate attention compared to an unreasonable parent. Hence, after I've checked with Patsy on Tuesday, I did not call her until Wednesday. She kicked up a big fuss about that and demanded to see the Principal.

When she saw the Principal, she was using her usual grouchy tone as usual. Instead of settling her daughter's issue of bringing her handphone to school, she complained to the Principal about my 'slow' reaction of getting back to her, thinking that my principal would reprimand me for that.

Mrs Tan commented that she did not expect her teachers to be at the staff room all the time to answer parents' calls. Besides the usual teaching periods, teachers have other activities to attend to. She did not think that having a response time of two days was wrong because I had a valid reason for that. Gosh, I was really thankful to Mrs Tan for being so supportive. I felt really bad that she needed to waste her time to deal with such parents. It took her quite a while to 'enlighten' the parent, but to no avail.

Seriously, it's a waste of time trying to convey our stand to the parent. She's too self-centred to realise and understand that school rules supersede her own rules. These are the kind of parents who really display the wrong set of values in front of their children. If she can argue her way through so unreasonably and demonstrates the wrong values in front of her child, we will see how her child learns from such 'role-modelling' and uses the same way to talk to her in future.

Nevertheless, I really appreciate Mrs Tan for being so understanding and supportive, and I really marvel at her patience when she's handling such difficult parents. I really found it so hard to maintain my composure when I was speaking to her and she was obviously testing my tolerance.

Well, God creates such nasty people for a reason. It helps us to appreciate the nicer and kinder people we know, and it is these gracious and well-mannered people who make the world a better place to live in.

The past week had been a horrible week. The limited activities that teachers were engaged in were basically invigilations, markings and more markings. We were transformed from teachers to marking machines. Can't wait for the whole exam period to be over and only when that's over, it would mean the end of the suffering we have to endure with marking the scripts.

Chris only needed to clear two classes of Sec Three NT exam papers, both paper 1 and 2, because her other teaching subject is Music. Hence, when I was still struggling with my marking, she has already completed hers. But she was kind enough to accompany me to mark.

In fact, for the past 2 weeks, we had been spending our evenings and nights at fast food restaurants, McDonalds to be exact. In fact, we have been patronising Macs so often that we can be considered regular customers, haha, especially those macs which are open for 24 hours. Amidst students who are studying for exams are two teachers who are marking. It seems weird initially, but we didn't really have the time to think too much about it.

I can't mark at home. I would be super inefficient, because there's always the temptation of the bed, computer and television. At least, when I'm marking outside, I'll be disciplined to mark, other than the occasional people watching and the frequent purchases and munching of all those unhealthy coke light and fries.

Chris and I found a new place which is conducive for marking, the Burger King at Arena Country Club. We have been there for several days. At any point of time, there were less than 15 customers and the place was quite empty and quiet, that is if the manager did not switch on the radio to a decibel that is too loud for the normal human ears. If our eyes are tired from reading those untidy handwriting or those tiny beansprouts, we can always look out to the patch of greenery outside, the golf range where you don't really see any good-looking guys or any Tiger Wood wannabes, but a handful of rich uncles who spent their time and money swinging and hitting at those tiny golf balls.

Anyway, I had a horrible fright earlier on. Was marking with Papa at Burger King until 10pm and we had to leave because that particular BK closes at 10pm. That's the only drawback that I cannot understand. If only they don't close so early, I could stay on and continue with my marking.

Hence, Papa and I shared a cab back. He's going to Hillview and I was going to meet Chris at Choa Chu Kang where she would drive to West Coast Mac and I would do round 2 of my marking.

And guess what, after we had boarded the cab at Upper Jurong Road, instead of sending us to the designated places, we were taken to different parts of Singapore just because the taxi uncle missed an exit at the expressway. From Upper Jurong Road, we passed by Admirality Road, Kranji Road, Turf City, Mandai Road, Woodlands, Sembawang New Town, Yishun Road, and before we knew it, we were on the SLE to Thomson Road. Before the uncle turned in to TPE which will bring us to Tampiness, we told him to exit at the next exit and make a U-turn.

Gosh, What was that weird taxi uncle doing? Papa tried to ask him if he was new to the job, but the taxi uncle did not give him an answer and conveniently put the blame on the new taxi that he has just started driving. It was the new Hyundai Comfort taxi. But hello, if the uncle is familiar with the roads, it doesn't matter if the cab is new or old, the Singapore roads still remain right? His reasoning doesn't sound logical to me.

Fortunately Papa was there, otherwise I would have freaked out man. I was really tired and my contact lenses were really dry after wearing it for more than 12 hours. Papa told me to take a rest first. In that kind of situation, I don't think I would dare to shut my eyes for 5 minutes. Probably, I would be in the eastern part of Singapore when i open my eyes.

After the uncle had made a U-turn, our eyes were focused on the road signs until we saw a familiar road name. Finally, when we saw Dunearn Road and Bukit Timah Road, we were relieved. By this time, the taxi fare was already more than 25 bucks. Just when we thought everything was fine, at the junction turning in to Hillview, the cab suddenly jerked forcefully and came to an abrupt stop. Gosh. The cars from other directions horned at the taxi.

Imagine my fright when such a thing happened. I became very paranoid about car accident especially after my brother's accident. I was really scared stiff. I wouldn't want to die at the hands of a blur taxi driver. He tried to beat the red light and decided not to and just braked suddenly when there were cars in all the directions. And again, he conveniently put the blame on the new Hyundai taxi. Excuse me uncle, it's your skills lah.

When we were about to reach Papa's location, he suggested that I alighted with him and took another taxi instead of continuing my trip to Choa Chu Kang. Makes sense right, nobody knows what will happen after that, especially when Papa would not be around should anything happen. What if the taxi uncle loses control the cab again or loses his sense of direction? I would rather spend a bit more to take another cab where my safety would not be compromised.

For that taxi joyride around Singapore which amounted to about 30 bucks, I only paid 12 bucks to the uncle. He looked unhappy but what to do? Put the blame on the new Hyundai cab lah. Haha. It was his fault in the first place, and he wasn't apologetic about his action. Haiz, I forgot to note down his taxi number and name.

Gosh, I've finally cleared my CA markings. In my four years of teaching, this is probably one of the worst, where I took the longest to clear my CA markings. I am really exhausted, and can really feel my worn-out body giving way anytime.

I feel super inefficient and super guilty that my incapability has caused so much inconvenience to my colleagues and students. Fortunately, they have been very understanding.

I guess, the bottleneck really started to form in the month of April, the month that I had to be perpetually at the hospital, to such an extent that NUH had become my second home unknowingly. Everyday, immediately after school, after I've cleared all that I needed to clear in school, I had to make my way to the hospital with piles of marking in my bag, wishfully thinking that I could clear some marking at the hospital.

It's really impossible to mark at the hospital in that kind of mental-challenging condition, and by the time I reached home, it was easily 10 plus at night. By the time I've bathed and was physically at the table, it was almost 11 plus. After marking a few compos or compre, I would be so mentally and physically exhausted and drained.

The same process did not stop for a few days but it continued for a few weeks, to such an extent that all those students' assignments simply piled up to an incredulous mountain that never stopped growing in height. I was defeated, hands down by the foolscap monster.

With the deadline of submitting the CA marks drawing nearer and nearer, the only way to clear all these was to challenge my efficiency with the Zzz monster every night and surviving the next day with probably one or two hours of sleep.

Oh man, the nightmare doesn't just stop here. After clearing the CA marking, the exam marking has already made themselves comfortable on my table. Gosh, really feel like vomiting at the thought of marking, or rather giving up totally and surrender to the marking creature and just burn everything. I think amidst my exhaustion and eccentric ramblings, that is still a voice telling me "You must be crazy to do that" and i wouldn't want to jeopardize my career after hearing the responsible voice of a tired teacher.

Heck man, let me sleep properly for one night and I'll continue with the marking madness after that. That's a more sensible thought compared to the senseless and impossible thought of burning the exam scripts.

Peace no war, Zzz monster, at least for tonight.
