Saturday, December 29, 2007 My best friends these few days have got to be the toilet bowl and the toilet paper. Sounds disgusting, but it's really no joke when the stomach flu decided to spend xmas at our house. My mum went to Genting and KL with her friends. On the night when she came back, she vomited several times. When she reached home, she had to run to the toilet several times. It got so bad that we had to quickly bring her to the doctor for a jab. Then two days later, it spread to my dad, and that dreadful virus was spread to me. Drat. I did not think too much about it, thinking that I would be okay after a while. Then when I woke up in the middle of the night and started vomiting, I knew that I had struck the jackpot, the unlucky jackpot. Bingo! And the worst thing was that staff meeting would start in a few hours' times. I started to panic and self-medicated with the medicine that the doctor had prescribed for my mum. I was thinking, if I was going to be absent from the staff meeting, I would have missed out on a lot of important information. That's the worst situation to be in and I would be as blur as a sotong on the first day of school. Thank God, I was able to go to school and survived till the first half of the meeting until that packet of chicken rice and bottle of lemon barley betrayed me. Halfway through the meeting, I had to run to the toilet to vomit. Duh, and I thought I had gone to the wrong toilet. I was dead sure that I had seen the sign 'Female student toilet' before dashing into the toilet on the second level. Instead of the usual pink colour for female toilet, it was green, and guess what, there were urinals in the female toilet. Heck, let me settle the more urgent stuff first. Haha. It's really disgusting when the food and drink went in and came out from the same place. Anyway, when I was in a clearer state of mind, yes, my observations were all correct. It's really a boys' toilet, then how do you explain the sign outside? I thought, due to my hallucination resulting from the merlion's action, haha, there was an added 'Fe' in front of the word 'male', but nope, the word was really 'Female'. After that during the meeting, the confusion was explained. It was not a mistake. Some of the toilets were not ready, so they had to convert the toilets. Haiz. Should have explained earlier so that I need not spend time in the toilet figuring out the discrepancy. By the time the meeting ended, I was almost KOed by the virus, but still, I managed to struggle home in a cab and went home to rest. Was contemplating to see a doctor on my way home, but I really had no excess energy to wait and drag myself home in the hot afternoon after the doctor's visit. I was still hoping that things would be okay after a nap and that miracles would happen. Haha. When the fever kicked in, I knew my body had lost the fight. I had no choice but to see the doctor. Waited for my brother to come back from work and accompany me to the doctor. Yes, it's diagnosed as stomach flu and it can be contagious. Took the medicine as prescribed and slept through the night. I managed to crawl to school the next day for English and CPA department meeting. Felt much better after seeing the doctor and taking the medicine. Should have seen the doctor earlier to save myself from the agony of hogging the toilet. Oh ya, favourite student was so sweet these few days. He would send SMSes reminding me to take care of myself and blah blah blah. If he was not my student or if he was a decade older, I would definitely fall for him. Such a caring and thoughtful boy. Gosh. Enough of daydreaming, evil teacher. Anyway, just when I thought I was on the way to recovery from the stomach flu, the flu bug and its best friend sore throat came knocking on my face. Now, I feel like a virus-infested creature. Maybe, this is an indication that I'm not ready for school to start, do you call that the school reopening syndrome? Who would be ready for school anyway? Haha. Or is this the punishment that I should be getting as a result of my procrastination to settle my work before 2007 ends? Procrastination aside, time and tide wait for no man. Like it or not, the madness will kick start soon, and there's definitely more work and more stress for 2008. God, please drive away the procrastinator in me, and give me good vibes to keep me sane. Haha. Time for serious stuff and no more crap. Anyway, just a reminder, when school starts on Wednesday next week, please report to school by 7.15am and not 8.25am. Put your school bags in class and report to the hall by 7.20. Remember to bring your report book, holiday assignments and $3 for the student handbook. Oh ya, and bring a notebook to jot down notes and instructions before the student handbook is ready. Ta-ta. Time to rest. Must really recuperate so that I can recover in full power as the evil teacher. Wahaha. 0 Comments:Saturday, December 22, 2007 Had an early Xmas celebration with my girlfriends at Charlotte's house. Those were the presents that we had prepared for the gift exchange. That is a picture of me and my girlfriends, friends who have known one another for more than a decade. We were using the timer function of the camera to take the picture. While the rest of them were getting ready at the platform, I set the camera, which was placed on a stool, to a 10-second timer and quickly got into position. We tried a few times, and this is the best picture that the camera had taken on its own. Late-twenties people who are still so fascinated with taking pictures. Haha. But it's the joy of such simple things that keep the spirits up. Cheers!! 0 Comments:Wednesday, December 19, 2007 On the day of the release of the N level exam, Patsy called me in the morning and conveyed the good news when I was half-awake. 100% passes for CPA. Phew! I was so worried that I would not be able to sustain the previous year's results, especially worrying would be the results of Priyalatha, Kar Wei and Joseph Tan. Then Mr Lau called and conveyed another piece of good news. The percentage of students who scored distinction in CPA is 52%, higher than the national average of 20-plus percent and the school's previous year of 30-plus percent. That's the rewards that we have reaped as a result of the hard work that both teachers and students have put in. Yes, yes 4T1, I will keep my promise of subsidising $200 for your class chalet if you do organise one, so do keep me updated ya. After the good news has sank in, I start to worry for next year. Will I be able to sustain that high percentage of distinctions? Especially, when it's a new syllabus for CPA next year, and the new component of the coursework exam would be on website design and not the old syllabus which comprises of CorelDraw, Publisher and Powerpoint. Die man, the evil teacher is not trained in website design, and we can't use some of the commercial websites where they allow the users to create websites by selecting a few options and ta-da, a website is created. Siraj and I have seen a demo by the Lectora vendor and it seemed pretty easy to create a website, just dragged and dropped the specific functions to the main page, but we need to familiarise ourselves with the software before we can teach the students. A few weeks back, we were at the cafe at Jurong East library planning the Scheme-of-work for CPA, and wow, there's so much things that we needed to do, so many things that we needed to clarify with Mr Lau. Well, well, just like the Chinese saying, 船到桥头自然直, let's hope the boat will not sink before it reaches the pier, especially when the fat evil teacher is onboard the ship.Haha. Anyway, back to the results, I'm glad those who have worked hard have received good results. They really deserve the recognition. Our top scorers are Jun Hao, Wei Cai, Felicia and Siti. Jun Hao was still asking me where his name would appear in the hall under the Hall of Fame. Haha. Good news aside, there were quite a significant number of students who cannot make it, as in 5 of them failed English, and quite a number of them failed Maths and Science as well. To be able to go to a good course in ITE, the students need to get a good grade in English, Maths and Science. Once you fail in either one of the three subjects, chances of going to a good course are reduced significantly. It really pains my heart to see my favourite student so upset. He didn't do well, he failed his Maths and Science. Oh man, when I saw the gleam look on his face, not only his, but other students as well, I felt sad for them too. They looked so helpless. They didn't even know what was the next step that they had to take. They did not even open the envelope that had the eligible courses indicated. It really seemed like the end of the world for them. After comforting them and explaining the procedures to take, let's hope that they won't be so upset. Just try applying for the course and see if you can get a place in it. Keep me updated k. Some people have the misconception that NT students would be able to go to a ITE no matter how badly they have done, but that's not the case always. Last year, for my form class 4T1, there were some students who cannot go to any ITE courses, and they had to try to apply during the next intake in April. I really hope that I can drill this to the 4T1 students next year, that it is always good to prepare for the national exams early and not leave it to the last few days and pray for miracles to happen. I really pray hard that such depressing matter won't happen to 4T1 next year. But it's really hard to say, the current batch of 4T1 is so well-behaved and yet, some of them did not do well. Does that mean the next batch of students which is the current 3T1 would do equally bad as well or even worst? Haiz. Next year, I would be super stressed as I would be responsible to ensure that both English and CPA results would be good, and the worst thing is that I would see them for 13 periods a week next year, 8 periods for English and 5 periods for CPA. Will I vomit blood or will they be more mature and well-behaved? I think the former has the higher possibility than the latter? Time to buy more insurance should any drastic thing happens. Haha. After that, I met Esther and Rachel for dinner at IMM. Yes, Rachel is back for a holiday break before she needs to return to Melbourne in February. It's an 'ear-opener' for me when she talked about her and her husband's life in Melbourne and the students there. I've always wanted to go to Australia and experience the life there. Weiling was saying that if I did not enjoy the fast pace of living in Hong Kong, then I would definitely like Australia. Rachel invited us to visit her in Melbourne, perhaps in June during our holidays. Esther and I seemed quite keen on the idea, then we can stay over at Rachel's house. Let's KIV this idea first till Esther finds a job, not sure if she can apply for leave in June for her new job. Then we were thinking that we can ask Patsy along since she did her degree in Melbourne. Then again, if Patsy and her Humanities department is bringing students to Europe for their Humanities trip, then I don't think she would fancy going to Melbourne with us. Haha. Let's just put this matter on hold first. Come to think of it, the semester has not even started and I am talking about the June holidays haha. I should be talking about how I am going to survive for next year with more work coming our way. Gross!! Enough!! Haha. This picture was taken at Cafe Cartel by Hong Kian. Yes, he's working there as a waiter. He's another charming and well-mannered student. If I remember correctly, he's the chairman for 5N1. Another responsible chairman. Although he has started working at Cafe Cartel for only a short while, he seemed quite committed in his job. He's like our own personal waiter where he would attend to us whenever we required assistance. Think can give him an eight out of ten for his good service. Well done! No additional discount though other than the 10% discount that we enjoyed when I paid for the bill with my Citibank credit card. Oh ya, talking about waiters, I was reminded of my favourite student Ng Wei Lun. He's working at Bakerzin where the restaurant served delectable cakes and pastries. But he did not allow the evil teacher to patronise the restaurant for fear of embarrassment and for fear that I would sabotage him. Am I so evil to do that to my favourite student? Haiz. 0 Comments:Tuesday, December 18, 2007 Met up with my NUS friends at Pasta de Waraku at Central Mall. The pasta and pizza were simply delicious, very different from the usual pasta and pizza. The picture below shows the 3 types of spaghetti and a pizza that we had ordered. Do they look appetising? While we were trying the Spaghetti al Nero di Seppia, which is spaghetti cooked with squid, black squid ink and wafu sauce, we were laughing at one another because our mouth and teeth were stained with squid ink. We looked as if our teeth were decayed. Haha. This dish is really unglamourous even though it was quite scrumptious. Had a good time catching up with Alicia, Amy and Peiyi. I have not met them for more than two years. Haha. This meeting would not be possible without Alicia and Amy's chance meeting at BBDC. Initially, I thought that it would be quite awkward meeting them as it has been a long time since we last saw each other, but the awkwardness soon disappeared and before long, we were reminiscing about the good old times. After dinner at Waraku, we proceeded to Clarke Quay for a drink. As Alicia and Amy had to work the following day, we couldn't stay too late. We were saying in jest if our next gathering would be two years later. Haha 0 Comments:Monday, December 17, 2007 I'm back from my trip. Went there with my pal of fifteen years, Weiling. I've known her since my secondary school days in Swiss Cottage. Frankly speaking, I didn't really like Guangzhou. The air was really bad and it was a hazy day most of the time. According to our PSI records, on good times, the PSI reading would be 150. On bad times, it could be as high as 250. I'm not exaggerating. The air is that bad as Guangzhou is China's leading commercial and manufacturing region. There are a lot of factories in the suburbs which contribute to the air pollution. If not for the fact that the city government has banned motorcycles from the urban area since January 2007, the air could be worst. Hu Han told me that it's a norm for the air to be so polluted in China, but I don't remember the air being so polluted when I was in Yunnan last year. Probably, we were in mountainous area and the air was fresher. I couldn't imagine myself staying there on a long term basis. They were so many things that I cannot close one eye to. Firstly, some of the taxi drivers in Guangzhou were really reckless in their driving. They would cut into lanes or change lanes so often even though the distance between the car in front was so short. When they made a right turn or left turn, the bus or van would be so close to the taxis, but it did not bother them to keep a safe distance or drive slower. We were so worried for our safety. Even when it was green light for the pedestrians to cross the road, the cars would still turn, and the ridiculous thing was that pedestrians had to stop and give way to the cars when we had the right to cross. When we were waiting at the pavement to flag a cab, some of them did not do that. Guess what, they would go to the middle of the road to flag the cab. Goodness, were they in such a hurry that they had to sacrifice their own safety? Secondly, some of the people talked really loudly, to such an extent that the noise was beyond my threshold level and I actually had headaches several times because of that. Is it their culture to talk so loudly? They do not have hearing difficulties, do they, that their friends have to raise their voice when they are talking? I dare say that a group of six people talking is noisier than my Normal Technical class of forty pupils. Ok, enough of all those complaints in case it bores you. Guangzhou does have its merits too. The things are really cheap there and the food is really good, especially the Cantonese cuisines. Or rather, we got to eat the better food thanks to Yuang's recommendations. That picture was taken during our last day in Guangzhou. We had a seafood feast of oysters, mussels, squid, seafood porridge and not forgetting the hairy crabs. Yum Yum! And it's alfresco dining in the cool weather of 17 degrees Celsius. Cool! The guy on the left in the picture below is Yuang. Thanks to his hospitality, we got to try the delicious food in famous restaurants. He was a wonderful host. He spent his weekend bringing us around Guangzhou, carrying our shopping bags for us and even bringing us for foot reflexology after a long day of shopping. That was the first time that my feet were massaged by a blind. Anyway, to sidetrack a bit, if you take a good look at the leather seat that we were sitting on, it had the Louis Vuitton logo on it. We were so amazed and skeptical at the same time, is it the same leather that is used to manufacture those LV wallets and bags? Haha. The restaurant must be earning big bucks if those were really authentic LV leather. After three days in Guangzhou, we decided we had enough of the place and we took a train to Hong Kong. Haha. That picture was taken in the train to Hong Kong. It was a two-hour journey and we had our breakfast in the train. When we were thinking of taking a rest, this auntie who sat a few seats behind us was yakking loudly on her mobile phone throughout the entire journey. Gosh. Headache again. Haha. We did not take many pictures during this trip because it was only the two of us. If Yuang is around, he would help us to take pictures, if he was not around, then we had to take pictures on our own by placing the camera in front of us, hoping that we had gotten the angle right. But it was a few tries before we were satisfied with the pictures. Haha. It was so much better in Hong Kong. We got around in Hong Kong by MTR, which is similar to our MRT. Weiling was more familiar with the places in Hong Kong and she knew where to shop and eat. I'm very bad at remembering places. To me, all the roads in Hong Kong looked the same, so I really can't differentiate the places, let alone recognising which were the streets that we had walked. Haha. It's walking and shopping throughout those three days that we spent in Hong Kong. We tried those local delicacies besides doing the usual stuff that everyone else would be doing, which was shopping. During those train rides and while walking on the streets, we were observing the people there. The students seemed funkier compared to our Singaporean students. Maybe it's the winter season, that's why their uniforms seemed so much nicer with sweaters or cardigans. Even those working adults, it's like the norm for them to be seen wearing a suit. Hence, it's like a feast for our eyes when we were in Hong Kong. Haha. Anyway, I really think I've exceeded my limits, not in terms of money spent, but in terms of the distance that I've walked. I've never walked so much in my life. I was telling Weiling, the distance that I had walked for those six days during the trip was almost equivalent to the distance that I would have walked in a year back in Singapore. That was sheer madness. And it was so crowded everywhere. Goodness, where do all those people come from? Other than buying clothes, bags and accessories for myself, I bought things for my family and friends too, Other than the usual clothes and tidbits that I've bought, the best buy had to be all those notebooks in the pictures below. Not that they were cheap, but I really like the personalised cover on the notebooks. It's a thin piece of wooden cover and the shop assistants would draw pictures and write words on the covers for the customers. They did not draw the pictures or write the words using normal pencils or colour pencils. Instead, they did that with a metal that was heated to write on the wooden covers. Amazing! There were other things in the shop too, such as photo frames, keychains, bookmarks, etc. But I thought notebooks would be useful for teachers so ta-da, I bought twelve notebooks from the shop. Haha. Other than buying for the royal family which comprises of Grandmama, Papa, Prince and Princess, I bought for Grace, Patsy and Elizabeth too. I bought one for myself too. Haha. Gift for myself. I also bought for Weiling and Chris, and my brothers' girlfriends. Blur me forgot to scan the covers before they were given to them. Fortunately, I remembered to scan the remaining notebooks after I've laminated the front and back covers, hoping that they would last longer and would not be subjected to the wear-and-tear condition so fast. Cute right? That was why I was so captivated by the drawings when I set foot in the shop. Initially, I was contemplating whether to buy them or not, because they weighed a ton, twelve notebooks with wooden covers in two paper bags, but I was telling myself that since I did not see such nice personalised stuff in Singapore, I must buy them. If not, I would regret if I let the chance slip by, haha. I thought I would be able to manage, but I had overestimated myself. It's like the combined weight of six Step-Ahead textbooks. Haha. Imagine walking down Argyle Street or Ladies Market with those two bags, it was really a challenge. In the end, we bought a trolley bag to put those notebooks and other shopping items. There were still so many places that we did not get to go to within a short time of three days. Haiz, shouldn't have wasted those three days in Guangzhou, haha, we should spend six days in Hong Kong. Anyway, it's so good to be back in Singapore. It just feels good to breath in fresh air without having to worry about our safety while travelling on the roads nor subject ourselves to frequent headaches due to talking pollution. Haha. Although we spent quite a fair bit for this trip, I think it's money well-spent as we got to see other parts of the world and learnt more about their cultures. It was really a good learning experience and we learnt to appreciate the things that we have taken for granted. Till then to the next overseas trip, no no, till then to the next post seems faster than the next trip. Otherwise, it would be at least a good six months before the next trip. 0 Comments:Friday, December 07, 2007 Will be leaving Singapore in a few hours' time...Going to Guangzhou and Hong Kong for a week. Take care everyone... 0 Comments:Thursday, December 06, 2007 Finally, I'm here to update about the OSL Batam trip. Have been wanting to update it, in fact, I've edited the pictures a few days ago, but didn't have the time to pen down my thoughts because I was busy editing the video with Mansur and Malik. Yes people, I've finally mastered iMovie. Not exactly a pro, but I'm in the intermediate stage, haha. Come to think of it, this is so embarrassing. I'm the teacher-in-charge of Infocomm Club and yet, I knew nothing about video-editing. I've always wanted to learn it, but I didn't have the time to sit through the entire duration of the training to master it. It's always giving suggestions to the students how to improve the video but I'm not the one doing the editing. But it's a different story for the Batam video. We really started from scratch, and I learnt how to upload the video and edit the video for the first day. We called it the beginner stage. Three of us literally sat there for the whole day till 5 plus to edit the video. Iqbal was the expert and we consulted him when we were unsure of the steps. haha. On the second day, we proceeded to the intermediate stage. Haha. That's when we learnt how to include music and wordings. Haha. Still have a bit more to master before we can complete the video. Hence, to be patient for the debut of our masterpiece during assembly next year. But I guess the advance stage has to be put on hold till I come back from Guangzhou and Hong Kong. Anyway, Mansur and Malik have been a great help. They are really such good boys. They did not even grumble or complain when the lazy teacher was late for both days, made me feel so guilty. Haha, I'm really addicted to video-editing. We can do so much enhancement to a simple video that we have taken during the trip. Ok shan't go on and on about it. The main focus of this post is the trip. That's the beach at the resort where the students had their ice-breaking games. A quiet and serene beach, not exactly that fantastic compared to the beach at Phuket, but it's good enough i guess. That's the picture taken on the ferry. The top picture was taken on the upper deck with the strong wind blowing as the ferry cruised across the sea. The bottom picture was taken in the air-conditioned deck of the ferry. That's the group picture that we took at the resort lobby before we went to the orphanage. The Hello Kitty toys that the students were carrying were gifts for the orphans. Tan Huong liaised with Mercy Relief, a charitable organisation to ask for toys donation and they gave us two boxes of Hello Kitties. I guess McDonalds donated the remaining stock to Mercy Relief back then. To think that there was a mad rush at that time when there was the Kitty craze. Haha. Another group picture to add to the collection. These were the wonderful teachers who have taken the challenge to bring those students on this service-learning trip. Haha. We called it challenge as they were NA and NT students, but I completely changed my opinion of them after this trip. Although some of them were quite mischievous and not as enthusiastic initially, they were quite helpful and forthcoming in doing their parts for the less fortunate orphans. These two pictures above were photo collages of our students taken with the orphans. Even though they do not have parents to call their own, those children are well-manered and polite. They look so bright and adorable. That's the group picture of our students and the orphans at the entrance of Betesda Orphanage at Batam. Notice the ice-creams that the orphans were eating. Those were ice-creams that Miss Gopal had kindly bought for them from her own pocket. Oh, you should see the delightful and blissful looks on their faces. They don't get to eat ice-cream often and even though they were just Wall's ice-cream, it could make their day. Some pampered Singapore kids don't even give a hoot to Wall's ice-cream anymore. They will only eat Ben and Jerry's ice-cream or Haagen-Dazs Ice-cream. Those were group pictures of the teachers and the students who were in their groups. For my group, I have Malik, Mansur, Jun Wei and Ming Kwang. We were having our dinner at the restaurant in the resort. Oh, Jun Wei was sitting next to me during dinner and he was such a nice boy. During dinner, he didn't take much food, rice and only a tiny portion of chicken because the food wasn't to his liking. Seeing that he only ate so little, I passed some vegetable and chicken to him. As much as he didn't like the food, he still ate what I've given to him on his plate. After dinner, he even took desserts such as cakes and fruits for me, and later more servings of desserts for the whole table to share. He even made a cup of coffee for me after those delectable cakes. Wow, unbelievable right. Don't worry, the coffee was clean, I didn't have diarrhoea after drinking the coffee. I must give some credits to Jun Wei. Before this trip, I only had a few encounters with him in school, and those few encounters were not entirely pleasant encounters to begin with. Those were 'negotiations' that concerned my students and his friends. From his appearance, he's just like some super beng pai-kia who walked around the school with arrogance. But after those two encounters, he was not that bad an ah-beng, not those unreasonable and irrational pia-kias, but someone who is reasonable and righteous. During the trip, I witnessed the good side of him. Even though he tried to behave in a hostile and unfriendly manner, he was actually very helpful and obliging. I guess it's only the words he said that gave people the wrong impression of him, but he's really not as pai-kia as what he tried to portray. Several times when we needed help to carry any thing, he will be one of those few students who would take the initiative with his usual 'I give you face' excuse. If we go by his logic, that's more than just giving face, that's giving a lot of face. haha. Somehow, I feel that the hostile side of him is just a false front that he's trying to portray to act tough. There's really a hundred times kinder side of him that he should demonstrate to more people. This boy is definitely a piece of gem that is not polished yet. He seems to have some leadership quality in him as he has the presence of a person who can lead. After all, he's not the vice-captain of the Hockey team for nothing. There must be something about him that Irin has seen to choose him as the vice-captain. While editing the video with Mansur and Malik, we would smile naturally when we saw his expression. After he had finished his reflection, he gave such a captivating smile, not once but several times, and winked at the camera, a smile that could easily capture the hearts of many, at least it captured our hearts and smiles. Oh yes, we had included that golden moment in our video, and you would be able to see that classic expression. With that expression and his brown t-shirt with that interesting caption 'Make someone happy today', he's such an amiable person, so unlike the arrogant ah-beng in school. Oh, did I mention that he looks like Louis Koo? Haha, that's beside the point. Jun Wei, please portray the nicer side of you more often in school k, so that teachers will learn to appreciate you as a nice and helpful boy, instead of that super dao and super beng pai-kia. It will really make everyone happy everyday, and not just make someone happy today only. That's some pictures that I have taken during the reflection at the resort's meeting room. Let me share one interesting observation about Harris Resort. Everything about the resort is orange in colour. There's a lot pictures around the hotel. All the pictures are black and white in colour, but there will be a specific selected part that is orange in colour. The resort stationery is orange, and even the papers that they use to photostat the room arrangement list are orange! ------------------------------------ On the second day, before we proceeded to the orphanage, we went to the shops to get more things for the orphans. On the first day when we went there, we presented the old clothes to them that we have collected from our donation drive in school, six big packets of them. We also gave each child a pair of Hello Kitty toys, 25 kids were at the orphanage during that period. They were so glad when they saw the toys and even displayed them on the shelves. We also brought along two boxes of English and Malay storybooks and we arranged them neatly on the shelves. We also took their feet measurements so that we could purchase shoes for them. We bought school bags for every child and packed it with stationery, lots of stationery, pencils, erasers, sharpeners, rulers, colour pencils, notebooks, enough to last them for a few months, toothbrush, towels, etc. On the second day, we bought shoes and socks for them too, and we managed to get it at a good bargain. We bought tubes of toothpaste and washing detergent too. We even bought 10 loaves of bread with many different kinds of spread and sardine so that we can prepare tea break for them. While waiting for the kids to come back from school, we took some group pictures.
That's the family portrait that I've taken with the 3T1 students and the evil mama in the middle. This photo did not come easy. Poor Vengadaz had to take the picture so many times because the evil teacher was so fussy about how she looked in the picture. Hence, the need to double-check that her double chin and fat legs were not captured in the picture and that her small eyes did not blink when the picture was taken. Super troublesome ar, haha.
Those were the pictures that I had taken of every student with his or her buddies. Don't the kids look smart and adorable? Haha. During dinner, our students did not eat that much because they needed to take care of the little ones. They had huge responsibilities that they needed to carry on their shoulders. They had to feed them, made them feel at ease and most importantly, ensured that no kid ended up at the swimming pool. That's really a huge challenge wo. Haha. After the dinner had ended, everyone gathered to take a group picture. Oh it's no mean feat to get everyone ready for the camera, especially our little children. Haha. Every child had so many gifts to bring back to the orphanage. It's like Christmas has come early especially for them.
------------------------------------ On the third day, it was time for shopping. The tour guide had a weird sense of humour that we couldn't appreciate at all. Several times, I was giving Siraj the 'duh' expression. I did something really evil, haha. When the tour guide gave us his contact number in case we got lost, I saved his number under the name 'Lamer'. Sssh... Anyway, the first shop that he brought us to was the Polo Ralph boutique. The price of the polo t-shirts was only a third of the selling price in Singapore. Our good Papa and Tan Huong bought clothes for their wives and children, and yet, did not get anything for themselves. Patsy called them the good husbands who are close to extinction. Haha. Then we went to a shop where they sold the local products. We bought a lot of keropok, the fried and the unfried ones. We spent close to a few hundred thousands of rupiah over there, about 250 ooo rupiah to be exact. Don't wow, it's only about forty sing dollars. Haha. After that, we proceeded to the Golden Prawn Restaurant to have our seafood lunch, a sumptuous spread of fish, sotong, prawns, omelette, kang kong, curry vegetables, soup and Crab. Yummy!
Then, this super big donut cafe caught our attention. There was a wide variety of donuts. We bought half a dozen and tried it. It was simply marvellous, to the extend that each of us bought two dozens of donuts back to Singapore. Haha. Given the taste and variety, it's a good buy at about 50 cents each. After round one of J.Co donuts, we proceeded to round two of A&W. We grew up in the era where we loved their root beer float and curly fries, but we could no longer find A&W outlets in Singapore anymore. Hence, we each ordered a root beer float and indulged in this simple pleasure. Yes, it's really greedy of us, but once in a while it's ok right? Haha. Then after that it was time to return to Singapore. We went to Batam with our own bags and many bags and boxes of stuff for the orphanage. When we came back, we each had our bags, and three extra bags for the teachers. Haha, one bag of twenty-four donuts, one bag of two boxes of Kueh Lapis and one bag of keropok. Haha. Well, to redeem ourselves, the food are not only for ourselves, it's for our friends and relatives, so we are not as greedy as what we have portrayed. Haha. Just when we were thanking God for the safe journey to Batam and back to Singapore, our school bus nearly collided with a taxi when the bus was just outside the school gate. The taxi uncle just turned right into the school and make a U-turn, so reckless right. Our bus was in front and had signalled to turn right, we should have the right of way, isn't it? Luckily, the bus uncle managed to brake in time, if not, the consequence would have been disastrous. Phew! Finally, a safe journey home... |
