Saturday, September 30, 2006 Went to West Coast Mac again. Brought along my work, thinking that I could mark some stuff. But by the time we reached there, it was almost 10pm, and it was so crowded and noisy, not a conducive place to mark compared to Teck Whye Mac, and besides, I was also too lazy to take the things out to mark, so it was just another chit-chat session. Haiz, really sick of marking. Got the exam scripts for Paper 1 today, but I don't think I'll start marking this weekend, because I'm still trying to clear my CA marking. Really can't wait for all these markings to end soon. Haiz, it's going to be a longgg wait. Can a kind soul invent a marking machine? The only blessing during exams is that teachers don't need to prepare lessons to teach, but it's really boring invigilating the exam. You do nothing but stare at the students. Can't really belittle invigilation, because we have to be alert and vigilant during examination. But I do get a bit of amazement observing the students. Some of them would be playing or fiddling with their correction tape or the string. While they were waiting for the exam to end, you can see all kinds of expression on their faces. Some of them were really funny and super bo liao. Some were disgusting when they yawned with their mouth wide open. Yucks! I dislike stepping into a class when half the class was sleeping and not using the precious time to check their work. They can jolly well go home and sleep. How can they sleep during the important exam? Me being the evil teacher, I wouldn't allow them to sleep. Haha. Those who sleep will be volunteering themselves to sweep the floor after the exam is over. I like to see students doing their papers and checking the papers again and again. They look so hardworking and intellectual. These are the conscientious students who should do well. That reminds me of Yuxiang. haha. So far so all the tests that I've conducted with the class, I have never seen him put his head on the table at all. He would always sit up straight and check his work. To be fair, in case people say I'm biased again, haha, there are definitely students who are like him. Just like it's a rare commodity. This kind of students really deserve to do well. Oh, while I was at West Coast Mac, I saw this birthday party. Nothing unusual about Mac birthday party, but that one was something different. Instead of holding the party for kids, it was for people who were in their late teens. Cool ar. Chris was saying that the party seemed to have a colour theme which was green as most of them were dressed in green. If I were to have a party like that, the colour scheme will definitely be purple. haha. Cool!! But I doubt I'll be able to find 30 friends to come for the birthday celebration. As a kid, I always thought that having a birthday party at Mac was a fun privilege. You have all your friends with you and they have party packs and games to entertain the kids. The last time when I was working at Mac at Jelita (the mac is no longer there anymore. haha) during my secondary school days, I used to host birthday parties for kids. When you see their happy innocent faces, you will literally be happy too. Now that I'm too old for such kiddish birthday party, I've to put that on hold. If I do get married and have kids, then I will hold such party for my kids. Anyway, I heard something that was real sad for a 14-year-old student. I won't divulge the details here yet as not many people knew about this sad news. But I really feel sorry for the student and the family. And it further reaffirms the old saying that "Hao ren zao si", "good people die early". Haiz. Kind and good people tend to have a shorter life. Perhaps, God sees it as an end to the suffering they have on earth and bring them back to Heaven earlier. Then those evil people are left on Earth to suffer for a longer period of time. Sad Sad Sad. By the way, OSL Yunnan is raising funds again by selling VCDs and DVDs of the 20th Anniversary Celebration performance. I was targetting 300 VCDs and 300 DVDs, but the response hasn't been good so far. Hence, remember to support the fund-raising project k. Maybe we have not done enough publicising yet. That was why the response wasn't so good. But, we will be showing parts of the video during the recesses so that students will enjoy it and buy one to to reminisces the fond memories. 0 Comments:Sunday, September 24, 2006 Met Chris after school on Friday. After having dinner at Long John Silver, we were thinking of places to go where we could do our work. Woodlands Library, King Albert Park Mac, West Coast Mac, or Teck Whye Mac. In the end, we decided on Woodlands Library since it seemed more conducive. Then we took the MRT and made our way to the library. Gosh, to our biggest surprise, the library was CLOSED! That was the last thing on my mind, or rather it has never crossed my mind that the library would be closed. Even if it's during the weekends, the library would be open. That is really not our day. Haha. The library is closed due to some annual event, something like their annual dinner and dance. Of all days, the library is closed. But can't really blame anyone, because if we were frequent users of the library, we would know in advance that the library would be close. Come to think of it, on the way up the escalator from basement to the first level, I noticed that the library at Lot 1 was not that brightly-lit. I didn't think too much about it. If only I've voiced out my observation, that would save us a wasted trip to Woodlands Library. Talking about Woodlands Library, the last time I was there was almost 3 or 4 years ago. If I remembered correctly, I was there with my friends to do some research for our term paper during our university days. ...and ta-da, we are back to square one. haha. In the end, we still settled for Mac at Woodlands Civic Centre. If that's the case, we should have just settled for the Mac at Teck Whye. But I managed to clear 5 piles of spelling. Phew, that's a lot ar, considered that we were only there for 3 hours. Initially, Chris was doing her assignment and her lesson plans. She seemed so engrossed typing away on her Apple laptop, but guess what, she managed to tap on the wireless network and accessed the Internet and played her Literati. Duh! Anyway, for the OSL Yunnan Fund-raising activity, we will be selling the 20th Anniversary Video to raise funds, the actual performance, the preparation behind the event, behind the scene footage. Hence, if you are interested, remember to keep a lookout for our promotion. We should have 2 versions: the VCD and the DVD. But right now, I'm sourcing for printing companies, so if you have lobangs for cheap printing, be it the CD covers or the CD labelling, do let me know. haha. I would give you the honour and acknowledge your contribution on my humble blog. haha. Oh that reminds me, I have not posted the contract that Bryan has written on my blog yet, and I have not posted the incident report that Qinhong has written too. I'll save them the embarrassment for the time being. Ok time to prepare dinner le. 0 Comments:Friday, September 22, 2006 Managed to leave school before 4 today, that's rare, and a miracle too. But lazy me took a nap in the evening, too tired I guess. But I got a shock when I woke up. In my semi-sleeping mode, I thought I slept throughout the night and woke up at 7 am when it was in fact 7 pm. I nearly freaked out! Thought I was going to be late for school and that is so unprofessional of a teacher. Because of that stupid boo-boo, I woke up with a bad headache and a running nose. The moral of the story? Sleep with a peaceful mind? Been wanting to blog recently, but was held back due to the massive load of work that I needed to complete. Initially, I wanted to edit my exam papers, but I left it in my school locker, so that explained why I'm blogging when I'm not supposed to. haha. Add on to the fact that I like to give my two-cents worth, nono, should be 90-cents worth of comments, so without fail, I can always submit a 2000-word post. Hence, blogging will usually take me an hour to write and edit. Wow, it's going to be hell for the next two weeks. Tons and tons of things to do and markings to clear for the CA marks. After that, the exam papers will come in and it's another level of hell. YUCKS YUCKS!!! Talking about marking, Chris and I were at McDonalds last night, I was marking my comprehension and she was doing her assignment. I thought I was quite productive, but she felt that I was easily distracted. Haha. I would be more distracted if I'm at home, with the television and computers. Initially, I was not really comfortable doing my marking at Macs, because there were so many students there too who were supposed to be studying but they talked and laughed more than the time they spent doing their work. Moreover, the paranoid me thought that people were scruntising what I was doing. But I could not care less. I just plugged my earpiece to my handphone and listened to Class 95 while I was marking. That blocked out the noisy environment caused by the boisterous students. My poor tagboard was vandalised and relunctantly, I had to delete the contents, thanks to a sore loser. I gave him a shelling today. He did not even know what was wrong and made to squat during the vocab test. Serve him right for being so petty. I cannot stand people who are so petty, especially boys. If they are unhappy, I rather they settle it the man's way, instead of the 'small people' way. Talk about the misunderstanding or whatever things he is unhappy about, if there's a need, trash things out. What for badmouth people at my tagboard or on other people's tagboard. When such a thing happens, it incur the wreaths of other people and a spam war was declared, between PTS (the so-called Pian Tai Society) and 4 degrees, and the sister company of 4 degrees, 5 percent. Talking about PTs, I really can't believe that YX was the chairman, and now promoted to advisor. So to be a chairman in the first place, does he need to the most PT among the members? But how can my favourite student be a PT in the first place? He's such a nice boy, hardworking, conscientious, attentive, polite, etc. I really can't convince myself that he's such a person. Haha. I talked to the class about having cliques in class, the results of all these internal conflict. It's ok to have cliques, as in it's good to have close friends to share your happiness and sadness. But it shouldn't be the case where this clique is at loggerheads with the other and you badmouth the other group. Fancy them comparing which group is better at 'digging'. That's NONSENSE. I really hate people who DIG. I don't see any enjoyment or satisfaction in doing that. Instead, it reflects badly on them. doesn't it? They look like some private parts deprived kids, and who's the mastermind behind all these? The biggest Perverts-ZY and Chui Chui. Birds of a feather flock together, the so-called 'birdies' and that explains why. They needs to look for more birds to flock with them. Talking about ZY made me really dishearten. Gave him a good scolding, as in really blasted at him, because I cannot stand that pig brain. He already had a porky hand, and as if that is not enough, he still wants a big brain. He's always too sensitive, cannot interpret information properly and always jumps to conclusion. After that blasting, he told me he has finally woken up from his beauty sleep, like some sleeping beauty ar! But wait, if I woke him up, the so-called 'sleeping beauty' from his beauty sleep, wouldn't that make me a beast then? Oh No!!! But even I'm a beast, I'm definitely a kind beast who woke up the sleeping pig instead of the sleeping beauty. haha. He claimed that I was brutally insulting him when I said that he had a pig brain and a porky hand. If I could brutally insult him, I would have operated on his head and changed that pig brain of his with a turtle brain instead. Turtle should be cleverer than pig ar. haha. But I'm proud to announce that I have made a big impact in that pig brain's life. According to him, he felt that I have been a caring teacher who was there to advise and guide him along that rough patch. He will remember my kindness. Haha. I was so impressed with myself. I did not know that I was capable of doing that. Thick-skinned aside, but for a student to tell me that, I really feel a great sense of satisfaction and achievement. Compare the amount of effort that I have put in and time that I have sacrificed, all these were worth it and my anger with that pig brain just subsided with that compliment. I guess, that's the benefit of becoming a teacher. They have the power to make a difference to the lives of the students. They have the power to leave a deep impact to the lives of the students. They have the power to guide them in the uncertain path they are leading. Teaching is really a rewarding and inspiring career. But seriously, who in the right mind will know how to appreciate zy? If I were wx, I can easily do without a boyfriend like him who doesn't even have the basic trust for his girlfriend. Talk about loving her so much and can't do without her!! How can there be love in the first place when the important trust is missing? 0 Comments:Thursday, September 07, 2006 Went to school for oral yesterday. The candidates were quite good. But I think the picture discussion component was quite hard. The conversation topic seemed quite ok. "Tell me about one or two of your friends and why you like them as friends." Quite an easy topic for talk about. Think think now, who comes to your mind as you read the topic? Mine has to be Chris and Weiling. They are my 'bestest' friends. Sounds childish? But who cares. haha. I've known Weiling since Sec one and that was 14 years ago. Wow, old already. I missed those secondary school days. haiz. I knew Chris when I was in JC, 10 years ago. Not exactly close to her then, but the friendship grew stronger in recent years. She's always there for me when I needed a listening ear or advice. Nah, I'm not very good at expressing how good they are. I do appreciate the times we share and the things they have done for me, but such things need not be mentioned so explicitly. Deep down in my hearts, both of them do occupy a special place in my heart. Met up with my I & E members today. Finally, things are more or less settled. Phew! Pray that everything goes smoothly on that day. That will then be one load off my mind. Gave them a treat today for the effort that they have put in and will put in. Andre only wanted McDonald but I thought they deserved something better. 'Better' to Andre is order 1 set of meal to eat and take away another set. Duh! An easily-contented boy. haha. I suggested Pizza Hut, Mayim or Swensons. Quite sick of Pizza Hut though! There was a period of time when I ate Pizza Hut thrice in two weeks. Had an overdose of the new pizza, so pizza is out. Mayim to Wilson is only a high class 'cai-fan' (mixed vegetable rice) restaurant, so that's nothing fantastic, because he can eat 'cai fan' anytime at home. In the end, we went to Swenson. Had a good laugh over lunch. Wilson said that it's like Mama bringing four sons out, Yuxiang, Calvin, Wilson and Andre. Haha. That will be good ar. Give birth to quadruplet. Wow. So does that mean I brought 8 children out on Tuesday then? haha. Wow! Evelyn, Hui Min, Lynette, Yuxiang, Bryan, Joel, Qiheng, Zhong Yan. We went to Evelyn's parents' indonesian restaurant at Lucky Plaza for lunch. Our dear Evelyn was the waitress who recommended the food to eat, took the order and at the end, became the cashier who collected the money and gave her evil teacher 10% discount. We took some pictures and I wanted to post the "Quan Jia Fu" here but two of my 'unfilial sons', Bryan and Zhong Yan refused to pose properly for the picture and spoiled the so-called 'family photo'. Duh!! But Evelyn and Lynette looked so pretty and feminine when they wore skirts. My five 'sons' all wore black on that day, same colour as their evil 'mama'. United ar. haha. Enough of all the happy events, Let me vent my frustration now. My three years of teaching career was nearly jeopardised by a student from my form class on Monday, and I'm like "there goes all the hard work and effort that I've put in for their past 3 years". Y has been constantly absent from school for many days. For the whole of term three, out of 45 days, he was only present for less than 14 days. I'm not exaggerating, it's true. Then for his Prelim exams, he only sat for a few papers. When I distributed the entry proofs for the students, he was not present at all, as usual. I called him so many times to ask him to come down to school and take, and even scolded him, he refused to come to the school at all. I was really pissed off with him. What exactly is wrong with him? He did not bother at all, so why should I care? I do not need to turn up in school so early on Monday during their N Level exams. If not for the fact that Junyong needed an extra copy of his entry proof, I wouldn't make a trip to school so early. Hence, I was thinking, if I'm not going to be there, Y is not going to get his entry proof, and he won't be able to sit for the exam. Y came for the exam on Monday. I scolded him because I cannot stand students who fly kite or fly aeroplanes with me. He deserved the scolding anyway because he did not even care about his future at all. He could not give me a good reason for his absence from school, absence for his Prelim papers, his refusal to come down to school to take his entry proof. He did not even bother to explain too. He just said that he needed to get the entry proof for his exam. I'm not giving it to him unless he gave me a good reason for all these. He didn't. He just stood there for ten minutes, and I felt like a fool talking to a wall. All I needed was to hear a good reason. Even if there isn't, the least he could have done was apologised or said things such as "the exam is very important for his future" or "he really wants to do well for his exam". He did not even say anything of such content at all. I was so fed up with him. The reason he gave for needing the entry proof was that he needed to know his exam index number and where he was supposed to sit. I told him that the seats were all indicated and pasted with the sticker. He could go in and spot the empty seat which has to be his, because the rest of the students would have been seated by them. He refused to listen. Seeing that it was almost time for the exam, I wanted to give in and give him the entry proof. All I needed was for him to stay after the exam to see the Principal regarding all these issues. I had classes from 8-11 and asked him to wait till 11, he refused to give me the assurance that he would stay. How can a student be so stubborn and nonchalant about his future? Anyone with a sensible mind would have just agreed given the urgency of the matter. He didn't. That was the last straw for me. I told him to go to the exam centre first as I could not communicate with him anymore. If he was to stay on in the staff room, he would be late for the exam and I would have lost my cool with him. All those were too much for my threshold of tolerance. Never have I expected my students to respond that way to me. He's one of those 'silent killers' who really made you feel real irritated and stupid. I chased him out of the staff room and asked him to go for his exam. I needed some time to cool down too after all that frustration. Five minutes before the start of the paper, I went to the exam centre, wanting to pass him the entry proof. I was willing to give in and bring the entry proof to him, only to find out that he was not there at all! He did not sit for his exam. I was so disappointed with him. Halfway through my class with 1T1 at Comp Lab 1, Subair called me and told me that the school has called Y and he told his mother that I refused to allow him to sit for the paper and asked him to go home. My God, how can he accuse my like that? Can you imagine how angry the parents would have been if they were told of such things? I explained the situation to Subair and that Mr Loh wanted me to go to the General Office and explained the matter to him. I wanted to because I did not like to be accused like that and I needed to clear my name. But there's no way I can leave the class like that, especially when it's 1T1 and they were at the lab doing the recording of their oral test, and some of them were having problems with the recording, the software or the headset. I can't dump my 40 students to attend to an ungrateful student like him. But throughout my lesson with 1T1, my mood was definitely affected. In my mind, I was thinking how Mr Loh would react and how he would blast at me and demand an explanation from me. I was like 'there goes my career'. I was really in a bad mood, but still I needed to help the students to finish the recording as the marks would be included in their CA marks. Evelyn was there with her I & E group and I was simply not in the mood to help them. Fortunately, Michelle was there to supervise her group. I think Evelyn could sense that I was not my usual self, and asked me what had happened. But I was really not ready to share this with her. But she was still quite encouraging. When I went to the office, Mr Loh was there. I was spared of the the accusations and the blasting. I explained the matter to him and he was able to understand. The school tried calling Y a few times and he refused to answer the phone. What big shot ar! The mother needed to force him to answer the phone. Gosh, any students who know that the HOD or the VP is on the line, they would answer the phone immediately and not throw their tantrums like that. I called Y's mother and explained the matter to her. She was quite understanding as she knew the son can be quite stubborn at times. She was quite helpless at times and she couldn't force her son to come to school regularly. I can't really blame her. She has done her part and it's all up to Y to reciprocate. He didn't, of course. He refused to sit for the afternoon paper, and the school had to ask the OM, Mr Kong to bring him from his house. Can you imagine that? It's his own exam, and he can throw his tantrums, refusing to take the exam and still had to trouble the OM to bring him to school. Duh! I gave up, I really couldn't understand the mentality of such students. My only mistake was that I did not surface the matter earlier to the Principal. I had briefly discussed the matter with Patsy, Zul and Mr Lau. He had seen the Principal at the beginning of term 3, but it didn't help though. I had wanted to bring him to see the Principal but I did not have the chance to do so, because he was constantly MIAing. Such behaviour and attitude from him is really undesirable of him. I really take my hand off his matter for the time being because I really could not tolerate such bad attitude. YUCKS! All I ask for my 4T1 is for them to behave themselves properly for the last 3 weeks before they sit for the N levels exam, and work hard for the exam and give it their best shots. That isn't too difficult right? Sigh..... After going to school for three consecutive days, Thursday and Friday are going to be marking days for me. I'll 'bi guang' and concentrate on my unfinished piles and piles of marking. Tons and tons of things to mark. I'm going to be productive and mark. Hopefully lah. I'm not expecting much. haha. 0 Comments:Sunday, September 03, 2006 Gosh, I hate the after-taste of the cappuccino. Really feel like vomiting. Can you imagine how sinful it is to drink Cappuccino at 12 plus in the morning, and to make it worse, a slice of Oreo cheesecake from McCafe. Haha. In the end, I still ordered my favourite Ice Lemon Tea to wash down the taste of coffee. Not that I hate coffee, i do like coffee. I like the process of drinking coffee, sipping the coffee as you chat with friends, but the after-taste of coffee just irks me. Anyway, just this week alone, Chris and I have been to West Coast Mac for two days, we are like their regular customers now. The coffee is still keeping me awake. To kill time, I watched 'Full House' on channel 55 for the third time since yesterday. Rain is so handsome, he looks so cute in the show. Now I can understand why Jacq was so mesmerised with him. A year ago, Jacq was simply crazy over this guy and I couldn't fanthom why. After watching the show, I truly know how charming this single-eyelid guy can be. Greedy me really resolves to accomplish a lot of things during the holidays. I must be productive during this short September holidays. There's tons and tons of work for me to clear during the holidays. I need to settle the Oral recording for 1T1, prepare the computer labs for the CPA practical exam, revise the practical paper with 4T1 during the holidays, settle the presentation for the I & E project, be the oral examiner for the Sec 3 oral, settle the SEM report, complete the LC project, mark the IPW project, and of course, try to settle as much marking as I can, clear the backlog that I have accumulated since the oral exam, and not forgetting the end-of-year exam EL and CPA papers that I need to set. OMG, Is it possible to do so many things during the one week holiday? I must really be more disciplined. Perhaps, the only solution is to come online less often now. I really can't do any constructive work when I log on to MSN. Haiz... 0 Comments:Friday, September 01, 2006 What a way to celebrate Teachers' Day! My class played Murderer, Musical Chairs and Heart Attack. Gosh, aren't these games supposed to be played by primary school kids and my dear 4T1 played that during the Teachers' Day celebration! As sporting teachers, Zul and I joined in and played with them. Zul's better at musical chair, he managed to survive till the last two players. The winners got to eat the Teachers' Day cupcakes. Haha. We talked about our plans for the end of the year. Initially, we wanted to book a chalet at Aloha Loyang. It will be fun. But I'm worried that my boys would smoke and drink there, and it's going to be quite problematic. Hence, that idea is dropped. But I'll be treating the whole class to Seoul Garden on the day of the release of their 'N' level results. Hopefully, everyone will go with a happy face, so must work hard for the 'N' Levels k! Oh my dear form class gave me a huge Teachers' Day card, the size of a drawing block and framed the drawing. On it, they drew Winnie the Pooh pictures and wrote the names of all the pupils with their Teachers' Day messages. So sweet of them ar! Last year with them. Although some of the boys are quite mischievous and rude at times. I will still miss the class. I do have some fond memories with them. Thanks for all the Teachers' Day presents and cards! Let me try to recall. Need to thank Huimin, Evelyn, Haojie, Alison, Silvia, Bryan, Hanyi, Michelle, Emily, Priscilla, Rachelle and Sheam for the cards and presents, Shuqri, Faiz and Timothy for the flowers, Priscilla for the yummy cake, Leuven, Fengling and Rini for the cookies. And not forgetting the tags on the tagboard, our dear Bryan tagged at 0000 sharp on Teachers' Day. Haha, so thoughtful of him, and he gave me a Mickey Mouse chain watch. So when i see the watch, I would be reminded of our dear 'Mickey' ar. But it's kind of weird initially because he kept asking if i wanted the present or not on MSN the previous night. Isn't it weird for a student to ask a teacher whether she wanted the present or not? If i said 'want', it's so BHB, if i said 'don't want', it's so fake! Duh! How to answer such question? Then I realised that it's a watch, so he needed to make sure that I'm not so superstitious, because there's a chinese tradition that we shouldn't give clocks as presents, it's like sending one off to a funeral. Nah, i'm not so particular about such thing. I even asked him if he would cry if he sends me off during the funeral. He better makes sure he cries, or else I would come and 'haunt' him, Haha. Our dear Alison made a lovely purple card (my favourite colour) for me for Teachers' Day, but she doesn't have the courage to pass the card to me personally. She came early in the morning and left it on my table in the staff room. She said that it was so embarrassing to give the card personally. Duh, isn't it more sincere to pass the card to me personally? Bryan also felt that it was so embarrassing to pass the present to me, especially when it's wrapped in a pink wrapping paper. I should be honoured that this is the first time he's giving a present to a teacher. Haha. I have not wasted my effort and time on him after all, he does know how to show some appreciation. The so-called 'thick-skinned' teacher, according to him, forced him to do a card as well. Not too bad, quite a lovely card, given that it was produced last-minute during the wee hours at night. It was better than what I have expected. Haha. Luckily, there's no four sationisms (his favourite terms) mentioned in the card. I bought some gifts and cards for some of my colleagues too, those colleagues that I am closer to. It's aptly to show my appreciation to them on Teachers' Day. They have been very encouraging and helpful, and they are always there for me when I needed help, guidance or a listening ear. Grace, Elizabeth, Patsy, Christina, Esther and Siraj, Thanks for being such wonderful colleagues! I need to thank Chris too for scouting those gifts with me, and your touching Teachers' Day card. You will get your turn soon! I will do one for you when you are a full-fledged teacher. After the Teachers' Day lunch, we went to Great World City to catch a movie "The Devil Wears Prada". It has been ages since I last watched a movie. Initially, I thought it would be a 'bimbotic' or bitchy show, but it turned out to be quite an inspiring show peppered with pretty designers and models clad in designer wear. We marvelled at how they wear a size 2 or 4, and being a size 6 is a taboo. Does that mean those ladies beyond size 6 should hide in a corner and wept? But this show also illustrates how subordinates needed to deal with those bosses from 'hell'. They can be quite unreasonable and demanding at times. Thank God my superior isn't as demanding as Miranda. Otherwise, my life would be like hell. haha. If you are reading this, I hope things are better for you now.
